Abstract

1291729 Carbon fibre reinforced composite tapes DEFENCE SECRETARY OF STATE FOR 15 Oct 1970 [15 Oct 1969] 50650/69 Heading B5N A composite material tape comprises a backing layer, e.g. aluminium foil, glass fibre cloth or plastics sheet material, and at least one facing layer of carbon fibre reinforcement in a thermosetting resin, e.g. epoxy resin, matrix bonded to the backing layer, the reinforcement being at a bias angle to the length of the tape. The tape may be in the form of a flattened tube of carbon fibre reinforcement in a thermosetting resin matrix bonded to a backing layer within it. In the drawing mandrel 11 supported on stand 12 supports backing layer 14 during its passage from supply means 13 to take up means 21 and facing layer 18 comprising carbon fibre reinforcement impregnated with partially cured resin fed from spools 17 on rotary carrier 15 is wound helically around the mandrel and in contact with the backing layer by means of drive-rollers 16 and heated, e.g. by radiant heaters or by internally heating the mandrel, to cure the resin to bond the facing layer to the backing layer. Six strips of backing layer cover the surface of the mandrel and as the strips of backing layer 14 with the facing layers 18 bonded to them are drawn off the mandrel cutters 20 supported in fixed frame 19 cut the facing layers at the edges of the strips of backing layer. Alternatively if the cutters 20 are dispensed with the composite tape may be taken up through a pair of pinch rollers on to a spool as a flattened tube of fibrous reinforcement in a resin matrix bonded to a backing layer within it.
