Abstract

1291610 Liquid scintillation counters NUCLEAR-CHICAGO CORP 31 Dec 1969 [8 Jan 1969] 63420/69 Heading G1A [Also in Division G3] An automatic liquid scintillation counting system includes a conveyer for transporting liquid scintillation samples to a transfer station from which it is passed to a scintillation counting apparatus where it is tested in accordance with a programme determined by a coded indicator associated with the first sample in a series of samples. As shown, a rectangular member 30, having a cylindrical hollow interior fitting over a sample container 20, rests on a sample receptacle 11 of a conveyer 10 with an alignment determined by a ridge 65 co-operating with a keyway 12. The programme to be carried out is binary-coded by radially disposed holes 34 in a disc 33 which is rotatable about a screw 35 and angularly retained by slots engaged by a spring detent, not shown; the selected programme being usually indicated by number. The programme holes 34 are read at a sample transfer station by photo-cells 43 responsive to the light passing through a light guide 39 in the member 30 aligned with a light source, not shown, comprising an incandescent, neon or gallium-arsenide source. The sample container 20 is vertically transferred to a photo-electric counting chamber, not shown, on an elevator 51. The outputs of the photo-cells 43 are fed through a binary-to-decimal decoder to a programme storing apparatus, set-up by switches, controlling the counting and calculating functions of the scintillation counting apparatus.
