Abstract
1291284 Glass composition ANCHOR HOCKING CORP 4 Dec 1969 59345/69 Heading C1M A composition for use as a crystallizable glass for bonding or coating purposes comprises by weight 13 to 23% PbO, 4 to 11% B 2 O 3 , 4 to 6% Li 2 O, 14 to 19% Al 2 O 3 and 39 to 50% SiO 2 , optionally with a nucleating agent which may comprise 1 to 6% TiO 2 and/or 1 to 3% ZrO 2 or be chromic, the composition additionally including 2 to 5% iron oxide when the proportion of B 2 O 3 os 4 to 6%. The essential components comprise 95% of the total. The balance may include 4% CaO+MgO, up to 5% BaO and up to 2% ZnO. A semi-crystalline material having a coefficient of linear expansion of from - 5 to + 30 Î 10<SP>-7</SP> ‹C.<SP>-1</SP> may be produced from the composition by heating it to a temperature of between 700‹ and 1050‹C. for up to three hours. The glases may be melted under oxidizing conditions at between 1250‹ C. and 1450‹ C. and fritted by quenching. The frit may be used as a glaze or enamel on, for example, glass substrates. For such use they are sprayed on to the substrate as a suspensionin an alcohol-water mixture (e.g. 100 g. of frit mixed with 175 ml. of a solution of 3 parts water to 1 part by volume ethyl alcohol) and reheating in the range 700‹ C. to 1050‹ C. An outer coating of organic material such as PTFE may be applied. The frit may also be used in bonding glass-ceramic parts.
