Abstract

1291109 Spring clips L C ABBOTT (M Terkel S M Rose and F R Smylie) 24 Dec 1969 44939/71 Divided out of 1291108 Heading E2B A clip fastener 28 comprises a metal strip bent to form a U shape of which one arm 32 is shorter than the other arm 30, the free end of arm 32 having an edge 32a extending at 135‹ between the two side edges, the arms 30, 32 having at least one pair of aligned holes 36, 38. The clip is used to hold together overlapping sheet sections 20, 22 of the insulating jackets 10L, 10R for pipes which are claimed in Specification 1291108 (see Division F1-2). A screwdriver blade may be inserted into notch 42 to open the clip to allow it to be pushed over the sheet sections 20, 22. Edge 22a of tab 22 is also cut at a 135‹ angle, so that tongue 32t may enter slot 34 and hold the clip in place. A firmer lock is produced by placing the point of a dimpling tool in holes 36a, 38a in upper arm 32, and striking the tool to produce dimples (44g, 44b, Fig. 3, not shown) in the jacket sections 20, 22, which penetrate holes (36b, 38b) in lower arm 30. In an alternative embodiment (Figs. 4-6, not shown) tongue and slot 32t, 34 are replaced by a cresent shaped notch (56) in the bight of the clip. The portions of the jacket sections 20, 22 exposed by notch 56 when the clip has been pushed on are turned up by insertion of a suitable tool to form a bight and locking key (58). The dimpling tool is then applied as in the first embodiment.
