Abstract

1291069 Packaging tea bags; endless conveyers J SOLOMON 30 Nov 1970 [1 Dec 1969] 58643/69 Headings B8C and B8A Groups of tea bags are fed along a guide 3 by pairs of fingers 6, 7, the fingers of each pair being movable apart to separate the groups. Each pair of fingers are mounted on a pair of arms 16 carried by a rotatable pintle extending between a pair of conveyer chains 8. Stops 10 on a chain 11 moving at a slower speed than the chains 8 engage a depending tab 9 on each finger 6 causing the finger to slide along its arms 16 away from its associated finger 7 which is fixed to the arms. A cardboard box may be placed over each group of bags which may have been enclosed in a paper wrapper, or alternatively a heat shrinkable plastics film may be wrapped around the group of bags. The orientation of the arms 16 is controlled by guides 24-27 and 21 engaging an extension of a pin 30 extending between the arms. The fingers of each pair are pushed together during the return run of the chains 8 by a leaf-spring 22, or by a chain engaging the tabs 9 and rotating at a slower speed than the chains 8. At the end of the return run the arms 16 are lifted to the inlet of the guide 24 by an arm (38, Fig. 4, not shown) which is vertically reciprocated by a cam mounted on a drive sprocket which drives the sprockets 19 of the chains 8 by means of an arm pivoted on the drive sprocket and engaging in a slot in a wheel mounted on the shaft of the sprockets 19. The arm is spring-urged against a stationary cam, the arrangement being such that when the arms 16 are being lifted the wheel and hence the sprockets 19 are driven backwards allowing the arms 16 to reach the start of the guide 24.
