1290305 Bearings W NEUKOMM 21 May 1971 [22 May 1970] 16397/71 Heading F2A A bearing for a shaft is adjustable radially and axially simultaneously. A ring 23 of hard sintered material is secured to the shaft and has a cylindrical surface 25 which slidingly engages a bearing surface 37 of a second ring 36. The ring 23 secured to the shaft has a radially extending flange 26 which engages with an end face of the ring 36 and a third ring 32 also of sintered material. The surface of ring 36 remote from the cylindrical bearing surface engages a bearing housing 21 and has a non-cylindrical surface 35 which enlarges in size in the direction of the flange 26. The ring 32 is mounted in the housing so as to be adjustable axially, thereby varying the clearance between the flange 26 and the bearing surfaces 33, 38 on the second and third rings, and also, due to the non-cylindrical surface 35, between the second ring 36 and the ring 23 carried by the shaft. The ring 36 may have an axial slot 39 to facilitate reduction in the radial clearance between the cylindrical surfaces. The non-cylindrical surface may be frusto-conical (Fig. 1, not shown) or spherical. The centre of the spherical surface is preferably on the axis of the shaft in the plane of the surface 38 of the flange on the ring secured to the shaft. The ring 32 may also be provided with a spherical seating in an axially adjustable ring 30 in the housing. The housing 21 is provided with a threaded bore 29 into which the ring 30 screws. Rotation between the rings 32 and 36 and the housing is prevented by keys 40, 47 in the housing engaging with slots 39, 46 in the rings. The bearing surfaces are of hard sintered material, e.g. tungsten or other carbides or aluminium oxide.
