Abstract

1289847 Photo-electric position finding GRAVIMETKICS Inc 3 Oct 1969 48679/69 Heading H4D [Also in Divisions G1 and H2] A seismograph comprises an electromagnetically levitated body 8 which is held in a stable horizontal and vertical positions by the spatial distribution of the magnetic field of an electromagnet. Three photo-detectors 26, 28, 20 are spaced apart at the vertices of an equilateral triangle so that detectors 26, 28 measure horizontal movement and detector 20 vertical movement. A light source 14 is energized by oscillator 10 through modulator 12 to produce a pulsating light of narrow bandwidth which is collimated by lens 16 into a beam which passes around the periphery of disc 8 to illuminate the detectors. The apparatus is contained within a transparent vacuum tight housing 6. In operation a disturbance will result in relative movement of body 8 and cause the output of one or all the detectors 26, 28, 20 to charge. The output of detectors 26, 28, since they will normally charge in opposite directions, are added at resistor 40 and applied to amplifier 42 whereas the output of detector 20 is applied direct to amplifier 42. The output of amplifier 42 is integrated at capacitor 43 and applied to winding 44 of electromagnet 48. The energization level of winding 44 is monitored by winding 46 whose output can be recorded or supplied to a computer as a measure of the disturbing force.
