1289730 Drawing; extruding; making dies and mandrels; straightening; forging D C NICHOLS 5 Nov 1970 [15 Nov 1969] 56018/69 Headings B3A B3E B3H and B3P A die or mandrel for drawing, extruding, forging or straightening has a bearing surface 11 of silicon nitride. Examples described include a tube drawing mandrel, a die for hot or cold drawing, Fig. 1, a die for the hot or cold extrusion of a bolt blank (Fig. 3, not shown) and a straightening die (Figs. 5 and 6, not shown). The silicon nitride surface may be formed by flame spraying a silicon powder followed by nitriding. Alternatively, the silicon powder, which may contain 1-5% MgO, is made into a blank which is partially nitrided, machined to the desired shape and then fully nitrided.
