Abstract

1289180 Cyclopropane derivatives LELAND STANFORD JUNIOR UNIVERSITY BOARD OF TRUSTEES 26 Sept 1969 [30 Sept 1968] 47614/69 Heading C2C Cyclopropane derivatives of the general formula where P is a carbonyl or halo- or hydroxymethylene group, Q is a hydrogen atom or hydrocarbyloxycarbonyl group, each of R 1 and R 4 , which may be the same of different, is a C 1 to C 4 alkyl group, and R<SP>1</SP> is a hydrocarbyl group, P being a carbonyl group when Q is a hydrocarbyloxycarbonyl group are prepared by reacting a compound of the general formula in which R is a hydrocarbyl group, with a compound of the general formula in which X is a halogen atom to give compound of the general Formula I in which P is a carbonyl group and Q is a hydrocarbyloxycarbonyl group and then if desired removing this hydrocarbyloxycarbonyl group in known manner to give a compound of the general Formula I in which Q is a hydrogen atom and esterifying the carboxylic acid so produced. Methyl 7,7- cycloethano 6 - bromo - 3 - methyl - 2 - nonenoate is claimed per se and many examples are given. The invention also relates to compounds of the general formula in which X is a halogen atom which may be prepared from the Cyciopropane compounds of the general Formula I above in which P is a halomethylene and Q is a hydrogen atom by reacting in known manner with a reagent or reagents so that the cyclopyopyl ring is opened, a terminal halogen atom is attached to the resulting ethyl radical and a trans-double bond 5 formed between the 6th and 7th carbon atoms.
