Abstract

1288563 Polyacrylonitrile fibres COURTAULDS Ltd 19 Jan 1970 [20 Jan 1969] 3067/69 Heading B5B A wet-spun, gel-state carboxylate acrylic fibre (as defined below) is impregnated with a solution of a salt having a cation of a metal from Group II of the Periodic Table and an anion derived from an acid having a dissociation constant of at least 1 x 10<SP>-1</SP> the fibre being then dried. The carboxylate acrylic fibre is defined as containing at least 85% of acrylonitrile, and at least 0À5% of an ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid, e.g. acrylic acid, an α-alkyl acrylic acid (methacrylic acid for example) or an α-substituted alkyl acrylic acid, itaconic acid, for instance. One or more ethylenically unsaturated monomers, e.g. styrene, vinyl acetate or an ester of acrylic or methacrylic acid may be included. The preferred salts are those of Ca, Mg, Ba, Sr and Zn, and the preferred anions derived from strong acids, e.g. p-toluene sulphonic, benzene sulphonic acid, sulphuric, nitric or hydrochloric acids. The amount of cation retained by the fibre is preferably one half to twice that stoichiometrically required to form chelates with the available carboxylate groups, although higher proportions are acceptable. The preferred manner of dyeing the fibres, should this be necessary, is to add the dye to the gel-state fibre before addition of the salt. In an example, 20 gms. of a never-dried wetspun carboxylate acrylic fibre containing 2% of acrylic acid on the dry-fibre weight are immersed for 30 seconds in a 2% ZnSO 4 solution at 20‹ C. The fibres are then washed in demineralized water and dried in air at 80‹ C. They are then 0À5 gm. heavier than untreated fibres. Other exemplified treatments are with 0À6% MgSO 4 , 1À0% Ca(CH 3 COO) 2 and 0À5% of a soft finish plus 1% CaCl 2 . It is stated that this treatment improves the resistance of the fibres to discoloration by heat.
