Abstract

1288417 Heating by chemical action PHILIPS GLOEILAMPENFABRIEKEN NV 26 Sept 1969 [30 Sept 1968] 47436/69 Heading F4X In a system wherein heat evolved from an exothermic chemical reaction is transferred to the pipes 22, 25 of a heater 20 located within vessel 1 which contains a liquid metal mixture, e.g. Li and Ca, an oxidant, e.g. a fluorine compound, from a first container 2 together with an inert gas, e.g. argon, from a second container 10 is introduced into the vessel through outlet members 8, 9. The flow of argon serves to cool the outlet members 8, 9 while preventing ingress of liquid metal from the vessel. A pump 27 circulates the liquid past the heater pipes which supply heat to a hot gas engine 21. Supply duets 4, 5 from the oxidant have regulating valves 6, 7 and supply ducts 11, 12 for argon are provided with valves 13, 14 each having a bypass 50. Argon leaves the vessel by way of duct 15. Each outlet member 8, 9 inserted into a vessel wall and comprises a copper block 40 having a through duct 41. An insert member 47 made of material, e.g. tungsten not wettable by the liquid metal is located at the outlet end of the duct. The block 40 is insulated and has a cooling jacket 43. In a modified form of outlet member (Fig. 4, not shown) an electromagnetically actuated needle valve (53) is provided at the outlet end of the duct through the block.
