Abstract
1288104 Detection of atmospheric turbulence COMPAGNIE GENERALE D'ELECTRICITE 17 Aug 1970 [22 Aug 1969] 39612/70 Heading G1A The atmosphere is scanned for turbulence by causing the lines of sight 15, 16 Fig.2 of at least one of two infrared detectors 9, 8 to undergo periodic angular movement such as represented by circles 5 and 6. A lens 10 is mounted in a casing 11 so that its optical centre is not on an axis of rotation 13. The casing is then rotated about axis 13 as indicated by arrow 12. The temperature of the atmosphere varies in accordance with the altitude and the detectors will produce a corresponding sinusoidal output signals. In the absence of atmospheric turbulence the outputs are identical to within a constant (see C and D) Fig. 4; but when there is turbulence in one line of sight, peaks 25, 26 such as on curves A and B are formed. These peaks can be detected by feeding both signals into a differential amplifier (23), Fig.4. The output of the differential amplifier would then be a signal such as E representing the presence of turbulence. In a further embodiment the portion of space scanned is further increased by imparting to both lines of sight of the detectors an azimuthal sweeping movement. In another embodiment, the angular movement is achieved by maintaining the lens fixed and moving the detectors 8 and 9.
