1287676 Clips and clamps TECHNIAIR SA 17 July 1970 [1 Aug 1969] 34707/70 Heading E2B [Also in Division F2] A ventilating pipe of polygonal cross-section has adjacent end portions 1, 2, Fig. 1, formed with backwardly bent flanges 1a, 2a which together make a seat for a gasket 4, the flanges being held together by a clip or clamp 5. As shown, a clip 5 is used, before assembly the arms 6 of the clip being separated by a part 4a, Fig. 2, of the gasket 4. The clip 5 is placed astride the abutted flanges 1a, 2a, and the gasket part 4a pushed towards its seat 3 by a tool (12), Fig. 3 (not shown), introduced between and pulled through the arms 6 of the clip 5. The lower end 7 of the clip arms 6 then latch themselves behind the pipe flanges 1a, 2a. Alternatively, Fig. 4 (not shown) the ends of the gasket 4 can be pulled to remove it from between the clip arms and permit latching. An alternative tool inserted between the clip arms 6 has interengaging toothed bars (14, 15), Figs. 5a, 5b (not shown), which when slidden axially relatively to each other, are cammed apart to force the gasket 4 towards its seat between the pipe flanges 1a, 2a. In a further modification, holes (16), Fig. 6 (not shown), can be provided in one of the clip arms 6 to allow insertion of a tool to push the gasket 4 down. The arms 6 of the clip 5 may alternatively be kept apart before applying to the pipe flanges 1a, 2a by a short strut (19), Fig. 7a (not shown), displaced by pushing the clip home, Fig. 7b, to effect latching. The clip 5 may be secured on the pipe flanges 1a, 2a by a nut and bolt (21), Fig. 8 (not shown), parallel to the axis of pipe, or by an additional clip (22), Fig. 9 (not shown), grasping its arms 6. Alternatively, the top, closed end of the clip 5 may be made relatively rigid by forming it in a rectangular cross-section (23), Fig. 10 (not shown). In another embodiment, the clip is replaced by a thin metal sheet 26, Fig. 11, laid across the gasket 24 seated between the pipe flanges 25, its ends (26a), Figs. 12b, 12c (not shown), being bent behind the pipe flanges.
