1287469 Coating surfaces MITSUBISHI JUKOGYO KK 14 Nov 1969 55982/69 Heading B2E Adhesion between a first coating layer which contains unreacted epoxy and/or hydroxyl groups and a covering composition which contains unreacted epoxy and/or hydroxyl groups and which forms a second coating layer which can be the same or different from the first coating layer comprises contacting the first coating layer with a priming composition comprising incorporating in a mixed solvent comprising at least one solvent belonging to each of at least two different groups of organic solvents, from 1.0 to 30% by weight of one or more organosilicon compounds containing at least two different groups of different reactivity with respect to epoxy and/or hydroxyl groups, bonded to silicone, which solvents are inert to epoxy and/or hydroxyl groups, and then applying to the layer a covering composition which becomes coupled to the first coating as a result of reaction between the reactive groups in the covering composition and unreacted groups in the primed first coating layer which it derives from the organosilicon compounds. Numerous suitable silicon compounds are specified and this composition may be applied by brush. The reactive group can be an unreacted epoxy or hydroxyl group or an amine group of a preadduct of the coating composition and an excess of polyamine and polyamide curing agent. In the latter case it may be necessary for additional curing agent to be applied to the coating composition after its application to the primed first coating layer. The coating layers may comprise epoxy resins and admixtures thereof with coal tar or tar pitch and free hydroxyl-containing alkyd and unsaturated polyester resins.
