Abstract

1287396 Polymerization of olefins FARBWERKE HOECHST AG 11 May 1970 [10 May 1969] 22661/70 Heading C3P [Also in Division C2] Ethylene is polymerized, optionally with up to 10% by weight of another alpha-olefin of the formula R-CH = CH 2 wherein R is C 1-13 hydrocarbon, in solution, in suspension or in the gaseous phase, at a temperature of 20-160‹ C. and pressure of up to 20 atmospheres, in the presence of a catalyst comprising (A) the reaction product of a halogen-free magnesium compound containing 0À2-2À0 mols. of hydroxy groups per gram-atom of magnesium with an alcohol, a titanium tetraalcoholate and titanium chloride, and (B) an organoaluminium compound. In the examples:-(a) ethylene is polymerized using (A) the reaction product of Mg(OH) 2 , TiCl 4 , Ti(OiC 3 H 7 ) 4 and isopropanol or isobutanol; and (B) Al(C 2 H 5 ) 3 ; and (b) a copolymer of ethylene and butene-1 is prepared using (A) the reaction product of TiCl 4 , Ti(OiC 3 H 7 ) 4 , isopropanol and the product obtained by treating MgCl 2 .6H 2 O with aqueous NaOH and Na 2 CO 3 and (B) Al(iC 4 Ha) 3 .
