Abstract
1287074 Switching circuit for vehicles; electric couplings; cable harness FORD MOTOR CO Ltd 28 Jan 1971 3351/71 Headings H2C H2E and H2H [Also in Division H1] A wiring harness particularly for use in a vehicle comprises a flexible cable 14 including a power conductor 16 Fig. 2 connected to a battery (not shown) to form a ring main, separated by a layer 15 of insulating material from a plurality of light control conductors 17, 18, a plurality of electrical devices e.g. lamps 13 being connected to the power conductor 16 each via a semi-conductor gate circuit 24 responsive to a control signal on the associated control conductor, a corresponding plurality of control circuits being provided and selectively operable to apply control signals each to a respective control conductor at locations remote from the associated devices. As shown in the circuit of Fig. 3, each gate circuit 24 comprises a transistor T1, T2 the collector of which is connected to the consuming device 13, the base to a control conductor 17 and the emitter to the power line 16, the base and emitter being connected through a resistor. A control circuit comprises a manually operable switch e.g. S1 connected via a resistor R1 to earth line 38 so that upon closure, the potential of the base falls to allow current to be conducted through the transistor and associated device. The resistance R1 and the base-emitter resistance form a potential divider to stabilize the base potential and limit surge currents through the transistor. The control conductors are preferably formed as a printed circuit and the cable 14 is further covered in insulating material. At intervals, each control conductor 17 is formed with a connection pad 18 through which a hole is drilled throughout the cable adapted to receive plugs of the type shown in Fig. 5. Connection of the battery to the conductor 16 is made via the coupling 19 comprising a pin 22 with a head 20 and a clamping device 39 arranged around the cable as shown, the head 20 having spikes adapted to pierce the insulation to place the pin 22 in contact with the conductor 16, the sleeve 23 being of insulating material. A similar device 32 is employed to connect the control conductor to a respective circuit, spikes 33 being on the clamping device 37. A further device is used to connect the gate circuit 24 to both conductors, the transistor being placed inside the casing 25, insulating collars being provided on the couplings where appropriate.
