Abstract
1286951 Multicoloured paints containing polyvinyl alcohol HARLOW CHEMICAL CO Ltd 23 Sept 1969 [25 June 1968 17 Oct 1968] 30272/68 and 49366/69 Heading C3P A multicoloured paint comprises a dispersion of differently coloured particles derived from two or more aqueous film-forming polymer emulsions each containing polyvinyl alcohol in an aqueous outer phase comprising a substance which insolubilizes polyvinyl alcohol, particularly borate or chromium ions. The pigmented or coloured aqueous emulsion may be prepared by dispersing titanium dioxide and a cationic surfactant in a plasticizer e.g. dibutyl phthalate, and then tinting the white titanium dioxide base to the required shade by addition of sufficient water-dispersible pigment. The aqueous emulsion may be comprised of homo- or copolymers of vinyl acetate or other ethylenically unsaturated compounds stabilized with polyvinyl alcohol e.g. acrylic esters. The aqueous solution containing borate ions is provided by an aqueous solution of borax containing methyl cellulose or hydroxyethyl cellulose as thickener, and a thixotropic agent e.g. triethanolamine titanate or a natural or synthetic clay. Coloured aqueous emulsion containing polyvinyl alcohol may be admixed with borate solution and (if necessary) the gel so formed comminuted to produce the dispersion. Alternatively boric acid may be added to the emulsion and the pH of the resulting mixture adjusted with alkali. A further filmforming polymer emulsion binder stabilized with a cellulose ether colloid may be incorporated into the outer phase in an amount of up to 20% based on total weight, to improve the properties of the coating obtained. The paints may contain extenders, surfactants and fungicides. Examples are directed to the preparation of (1) a red flecked white paint by sequential addition to aqueous borax solution of a red-pigmented emulsion followed by a "background" whitepigmented emulsion, (2) a three pigment paint by the sequential addition of small amounts of red, white and blue pigment emulsions in turn to aqueous borax solution, and (3) a blue flecked white paint by a method involving the independent addition of each pigmented emulsion to aqueous borax solution, followed by mixing of the two dispersions.
