1286877 Well-lining filter R NEBOLSINE 9 Dec 1969 60150/69 Heading B1D [Also in Division E1] Apparatus to be inserted into an underground formation which is to be charged with a fluid comprises a perforated casing 3 having outwardly extending annular plates 15 between each pair of which there is at least one perforation so that when filter medium F is inserted around casing 3 regions of reduced density or voids in the filter medium are formed. The filter medium, for example sand, is contained in the annular space between casing 3 and another perforated casing 2 which is a sliding fit in an imperforate shield 1. Fluid - for example water - is passed into casing 3 through valve 11 and flows out through the filter medium and casing 2. When the filter medium becomes compacted or clogged, reverse flow head 14 secured to the end of tube 4 suspended from cable 6 is removed up and down causing a flow of fluid which may be aided by suction pump 1 through the head and into the tube. This flow causes movement of the filter medium into the regions of reduced density and a loosening of dirt from the surfaces of the filter medium. In a modification suitable for the formation to be recharged with oil containing solid particles, casing 2 has an imperforate portion extending to cap 8 and surrounded by further filter medium within the imperforate shield, tube 3 extends beyond the bottom of casing 2, and tube 4 is moved in tube 4a by means of a piston cylinder arrangement.
