Abstract

Volatile liquids, recovering.- Certain volatile solvents used in manufacture are recovered from gaseous mixtures containing them, by absorption in phenolic reagents, such as crude carbolic acid or crude cresols, and subsequent distillation and condensation. The solvents in question are methyl alcohol, amyl alcohol, ethyl acetate, amyl acetate, carbon tetrachloride, chloroform, di-, tri-, or tetra - chlorethylene, tetra- and pentachlorethane, and petrol. Using the apparatus shown, the vapours are washed by a counter-current of cresols in the absorption column 2, and the cresol charged with the volatile bodies is pumped to the tank 6 and then flows through a heat-exchanger 7 to a steam heater 8 and cascade evaporator 9 heated by steam from a pipe 21; the volatile bodies pass off with the steam to a distilling-column 10, where they are rectified, and thence to condensers 11, 12. The cresols deprived of the volatile bodies flow from the evaporator 9 to the heat-exchanger 7, and thence to the cooler 14, and so back to the storage tank 1 for re-use.
