Abstract
1285885 Measuring scattered light photoelectrically UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY 10 Oct 1969 [7 Nov 1968] 52906/68 Heading G1A In a device for measuring light scattered from suspended particles in a fluid 25 and having a lightsource 13, e.g. a xenon flash lamp with a diffusing screen 14, and a photo-detector 12, e.g. a photo-multiplier, a switchable means 22 provides alternately a reference light path 32 and a path 26 for scattered light, the output of the detector during successive reference periods being maintained constant by a control means, Fig.2 (not shown) which adjusts the sensitivity of the detector 12 and/or the intensity of the source 13. The switchable means 22 is an apertured rotatable disc, and the light-source is arranged to pulse only when either the reference path 32 or measuring path 26 is unobscured by the disc. The detector output is fed to an analogue-to-digital converter (33), and during reference periods the ADC output is supplied to a ratemeter (43) and then to a comparator (44) where it is compared with a reference voltage, any resulting error signal being arranged to control the HT voltage to the photo-multiplier. The error signal may also be used to control the discharge voltage of the source 13. A circuit is described, Fig.3 (not shown) for stabilizing the mains supply voltage to the xenon discharge tube. The amount of light scattered from the fluid, which may be an atmospheric sample, and hence its visibility, is determined by summing the number of pulses generated by the ADC during a number of measuring periods to give the average visibility during those periods. Alternatively, a log ratemeter (42) may be provided to give an analogue output representative of the visibility, and this output may be arranged to switch on fog lamps at a certain level of visibility .
