Abstract

1285744 Modifying insulating films by coating with metals UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY 19 April 1971 [10 Dec 1969] 60407/69 Heading C7F [Also in Division H1] The electrical conductivity of a thin insulating film is increased by superimposing a thin metallic film thereon and bombarding the metallic film with ions to sputter metallic ions into the insulating film. The insulating film may be an oxide or nitride, for example SiO, SiO 2 , Al 2 O 3 and may be deposited by evaporation or RF sputtering on to a substrate such as glass. The metallic film may be of Al, Au, Ag, Cu, Ni, Cr or Pb and may be formed by evaporation. An insulating film may be sandwiched between two metallic films on a substrate. The bombarding ions may be of Ar or Xe and are preferably as close in mass to the metal atoms as possible. The sputtering may be performed by sweeping a narrow beam across a workpiece or a slit mask and plasma source may be used. Surplus metal may be removed by etching or by sputtering but in some applications it may be left to form a contact. Contacts may be embedded in the substrate. The invention may be used to produce a resistor and capacitor in parallel and to make electrical terminal contacts for example through the insulating SiO 2 film on silicon transistors.
