Abstract

1285737 Accelerometers P FIKENTSCHER 2 Oct 1969 [2 Oct 1968] 48526/69 Heading G1K [Also in Division G4] A vehicle braking indicator comprises a rotary member 23 housing a lamp and having an at least partially translucent outer surface divided into different zones 24, 25, and a weight 29 connected to the rotary member so that movement of the weight due to inertial force effects rotation of the rotary member and varies the amount of light transmitted through a viewing window 26. The rotary member 23 may be a hollow glass or translucent plastics cylinder. On braking the lamp inside the cylinder is lit and slowing down of the vehicle causes the cylinder to rotate so that a larger area red-coloured section 25 shows through window 26. Traction spring 27 returns the cylinder to its original position. In modifications (a) a disc is attached to one end of the cylinder and is rotated by a cord attached to the weight which is slidable on a guide rail, Figs. 3-4 (not shown); (b) the weight is attached by a rod to the shaft of the cylinder, Fig.6 (not shown); (c) the weight is attached to a pendulum which moves the cylinder by means of gearing, Figs. 8-9 (not shown); (d) two coaxially mounted transparent hollow cylinders are provided, each with an attached weight so arranged that the second cylinder begins to rotate only when the first cylinder has reached its end position.
