Abstract

1285463 Thermosetting polymer compositions PHELPS DODGE MAGNET WIRE CORP 7 Aug 1969 [14 Aug 1968] 39558/69 Headings C3B C3P and C3R Compositions which are thermoplastic below and thermosetting above a predetermined temperature comprise a linear thermoplastic bonding resin as defined and a compound having a plurality of -NHCO.OR groups where R is an organic radical. Specified resins are polyvinyl butyrals, phenoxy resins and polyester resins, and the compound may be diphenylmethane diisocyanate, trimethylol propane tri-isocyanate or tris - (toluylene isocyanate) isocyanurate blocked with methanol, propanols, butanols, pentanols, cyclopentanol or cyclohexanol. The compositions may be applied to electrical conductors to form "self-bonding" magnet wires, the coatings on which may be thermoset. Many examples are given of compositions comprising polyvinyl butyral, phenoxy, urea/formaldehyde and terephthalic polyester resins; blocked isocyanates derived from trimethylol propane triisocyanate and isopropanol, t.-amyl alcohol or cyclohexanol, p,p<SP>1</SP>-diphenylmethane diisocyanate and t.-amyl alcohol or isopropanol, and tris- (toluylene isocyanate) isocyanurate and cyclopentanol or cyclohexanol; solvents such as xylene, methyl ethyl ketone, #-ethoxyethanol, #-ethoxyethyl acetate, isopropanol, butanol, cyclohexanone and monochlorobenzene; and optionally antioxidants such as 2,6-di-t.-butylp-cresol.
