Abstract

1285054 Pile fabrics I W S NOMINEE CO Ltd 8 April 1970 [18 April 1969] 20036/69 Heading D1K A process for making pile fabrics from a sliver knit pile fabric 11 comprises cutting, as by a bandknife 15, a layer 21 of the pile fibres from the fabric 11 and contacting one face of the coherent layer 21 with a layer of adhesive and subjecting the pile layer 21 in contact with the adhesive to heat and pressure. In a first embodiment, Fig. 1, a knife or spray coater 33 forms a uniform layer of adhesive onto a release belt 29 and the layer 21 slides down a slide 27 onto the adhesive layer on the belt and moves between a pair of plates, one or both of which are heated, of a press 35, the belt 29 at least being stopped intermittently during the pressing operation. In a second embodiment, Fig. 4, adhesive is sprayed continuously onto a backing material from a roll 87 and the cut pile fibres 83 are deposited on it before passing between two continuously rotating rolls 91, 92, one or both of which are heated, and a curing heater 95. The backing may be a woven or non-woven textile fabric, a plastics film or foam sheet, metal foil, leather or felt and the pile may be of synthetic, vegetable, animal or mineral fibres or blends thereof.
