Abstract

1284741 Aircraft instruments R J SCOVILL 3 Aug 1969 5779/69 Heading B7W [Also in Division G4] A chart is projected on to a screen which carries a fixed index, the chart is moved latitudinally and longitudinally so that the position of the aircraft (or other vehicle) carrying the apparatus is continuously indicated, and the movement of the chart is controlled by radionavigation bearing signals from two spaced transmitters or by radio bearing and distance signals from one station. In the embodiment either two VOR beacons are utilized or a VORTACAN beacon; the following features may be included: (a) means for projecting a vertical linear shadow on the screen for representing the longitudinal direction and speed of the aircraft and a horizontal linear shadow representing its latitudinal direction and speed, the shadows intersecting to represent actual direction and speed; (b) means for producing a circular image on the screen to represent ground speed magnitude and direction; (c) since the VOR signal(s) may be relative to magnetic north, magnetic deviation correction is incorporated; (d) arrangements for way-point navigation; and (e) a control signal for an automatic pilot is made available.
