Abstract
1284711 Modulating light HAWKER SIDDELEY DYNAMICS Ltd 2 July 1969 [19 July 1968] 13352/68 Heading H4F [Also in Division C4] In a light modulator composed of multiple layers of differing refractive index in a periodic structure, e.g. a multi-layer mirror, a wave filter, a set of interference fringes recorded in photographic or photochromic material, and wherein at least one controllable layer is of photochromic, bleachable, or tenebrescent material, or has a controllable refractive index, changes in the reflective and transmissive characteristics of the structure due to changes in the controllable layer are enhanced in narrow waveband regions as compared with the case wherein the material of the controllable layer is used in a non-periodic structure, or as a bulk element. Besides enhancing the properties of the layer, the structure is useful (a) as having a cut off frequency which is variable by control of the refractive index of the layer, e.g. by radiation, mechanical stress, or temperature (b) as a transmit/receive switch for a wave source, such as a magnetron: by virtue of the delay in the response of the controllable layer, the structure may be transmissive at the onset of irradiation, and thereafter become 100% reflective, whereby a radiation pulse only is transmitted (c) to change the colour of light by employing the absorption to modify the passbands of the periodic structure, even if the wavelengths involved are remote from those relevant to the normal characteristics of the controllable layer (d) for shifting the effective absorption frequencies of photochromic materials (see (c) above). In use, the incident light may meet the Brewster angle condition at an interface between two layers, or may undergo total internal reflection thereat. In a first preferred embodiment the structure is variably transmissive/reflective for light of wavelength # 1 and includes a layer controllable by light of wavelength # 2 which may carry an image and be variable with time. In a second embodiment the controllable layer of thickness (n/2) # 1 , where n is integral, is sandwiched between two multi-layer mirrors which per se are each highly reflective at # 1 , but so that the whole structure is 100% transmissive at # 1 . A change in the refractive index or absorption of the controllable layer by irradiation with light # 2 reduces the transmission and increases reflection by the structure.
