Abstract

1283740 Production of alumina and aluminium F E CONTI 22 Aug 1969 [22 Aug 1968] 42102/69 Heading C1A [Also in Division F4] An installation for producing alumina and aluminium from bauxite comprises (i) a single steam-operated thermoelectric power station CTE having (a) means for the partial recovery of the electric power used for the production of alumina in A 1 , the electrolytic production of primary aluminium and its derivatives in A 2 , and the production of iron and its derivatives in F, and (b) means for recovering medium pressure steam (10-50 ats.) necessary for attacking bauxite in A 1 , and low pressure steam (0-10 ats.) for concentration of dilute caustic soda obtained at S, drying bauxite in EB, drying the red muds in EFR, and drying the wet hydrous alumina in EA 1 prior to reaching the firing ovens CA; and (ii) means for feeding the heat recovered from the attack of bauxite and the concentration of diluted caustic soda to the thermoelectric power station through intermediate fluid at a high temperature, said intermediate fluid being fed to the feeding water of steam generators in the power station.
