Abstract

1283730 Portable power tools; stands and supports ROCKWELL MFG CO 3 Nov 1969 53861/69 Headings B3B and B3C A portable power tool comprises an air motor 10, a housing 20 containing gearing which provides rotation and axial feed of a spindle 110, and a tubular member 112 surrounding the spindle and which can be attached to a workpiece W by means of a fixture 113. The gearing in housing 20 provides (a) a gear train for rotating the spindle; (b) means for axially moving the spindle at a cutting feed; (c) means for rapid advance of the spindle; and (d) means for rapid retraction of the spindle. Push-button control means 165 are provided to select the required feed. The spindle rotating gear train (a) is provided by a drive gear 25 at the end of the air motor 12 driving through bevel gear 30 and spur gears 28, 36, 68 to a gear 118 on the spindle 110. The normal cutting feed of the spindle (b) is actuated by pressing a button 165 which pushes a slider blade 150 to raise a clutch gear 78 to engage driving dogs on the driven gear 68. The clutch gear 78 is in continuous engagement with a feed gear 125 on the spindle, the rotation of which relative to the spindle acts, through its threaded engagement therewith, to feed the spindle axially. To advance the spindle rapidly (c) a further button 165 is pressed to push slider blade 158 to push down a gear 50, which is in continuous engagement with the clutch gear 78, into driving engagement with a driven gear 58. The speed of rotation of the gear 58 is such as to rotate the clutch gear 78 and hence the feed gear 125 at a fast rate. To retract the spindle rapidly (d) a further button 165 is pressed to actuate slider blade 155 to push the clutch gear 78 downwards to engage stationary lugs fixed to the housing 20. This locks the clutch gear 78 and prevents rotation of the feed gear 125 whilst the spindle is rotating and a fast-retraction results. The clutch gear 78 can be placed in a neutral position. Adjustable stops 138 and 132 control the stroke of the spindle feed. When the stops 138, 132 engage their respective limit of travel the higher torque generated in the gears forces the clutch gear 78 away from either the gear 68 or the stationary lugs by means of sloping flank faces.
