Abstract

1283709 Spring drum apparatus R C FISHER 8 Sept 1969 [11 Sept 1968] 44377/69 Heading B8B [Also in Division A3] In a safety belt retractor, in which the belt is wound on reel 22 by means of spring 16, edge cam 38 is normally prevented from being rotated, together with the reel 22, by the engagement of projection 94 with either end of slot 92. When the reel 22 is being moved initially, after a change in direction of rotation, it carries the cam 38 with it, by means of an annular clutch surface, for the length of slot 92. At both its terminal positions, cam 38 blocks the engagement of locking bar 98 with teeth 114 on the reel flanges, by lobe 168 on 166 engaging tooth 106 of bar 98. After extending the belt, locking is effected by allowing a slight retracting movement, to free bar 98 from lobe 166, for movement into the locking position, by spring 146. When the reel has been locked, the belt may be extended further by first retracting it almost completely, so as to position gear ring 134 with its blocking projection 156 in contact with tooth 112 of bar 98. Cam 38 then moves freely into the terminal position, in which lobe 166 is operative to obviate locking. The position of bar 98 can be manually controlled by knob 120.
