Abstract

1283691 Propellent compositions THIOKOL CHEMICAL CORP 11 Sept 1961 32585/61 Heading C1D [Also in Division C3] A solid propellent composition comprises an inorganic oxidizer and a cured isocyanateterminated polyester which acts as fuel and binder, said polyester being derived from a polymer of an unsaturated C 18 fatty acid, for example linoleic or oleic acid. The composition is made by condensing the fatty acid polymer with a polyhydric alcohol to form a polyester, reacting the polyester with a polyisocyanate, incorporating the solid oxidizer and a curing agent, and then curing the mixture. Lists of suitable polyhydric alcohols, polyisocyanates and curing agents are given. In Example 1, a mixture of dimer and trimer of linoleic acid is heated under nitrogen with diethylene glycol, water removed by distillation, and the product heated with para-tolylene diisocyanate. This pre-polymer is mixed with castor oil as a curing agent, aluminium powder, and ammonium perchlorate of coarse and fine particle size, and cured at 100‹ F. to a rubbery solid. In other examples, the curing agent comprises ethylene glycol monoricinoleate and trimethylol propane, dihydroxy castor oil, and trimethylol propane and the dihydroxy polyester produced in the first step of Example 1. By increasing the amount of aluminium powder, the specific impulse of the propellent may be increased without increasing the burning rate. Other ingredients which may be included in place of or in combination with the aluminium powder are ferrocene, magnesium hydride, iron oxide, or iron, nickel, or cobalt pyromellitates. The propellants formed are substantially free from gas cracks and may have a higher loading of inorganic oxidizer, and lower burning rate, then those previously proposed.
