Abstract

1282609 Self-propelling missile and launching means therefor; rockets PHILCO-FORD CORP 20 Nov 1969 [20 Nov 1968] 56838/69 Heading F3A and F3C A self-propelled missile, for use as a target, and its launching means, comprises a tubular fuselarge section 11 (Fig. 2) fitted over a launching tube 15 and secured thereto by frangible screws which break when a predetermined gas pressure is developed by a launching motor 32. A blast shield 16 is provided on the launching tube. Glass-fibre reinforced plastic fins 13 are secured to the fuselage by straps (17, Fig. 5, not shown) and contain further rocker motors 22 in their base portions. The fins are slightly inclined so as to rotate the missile in flight. The frangible screws 27, Fig. 3, extend between an annular member 33 fastened to the motor 32 and an annular member 31 threaded in an extension 26 of the launching tube. The motor 32 is secured in the fuselage 11 by a clamp 37 which pulls the member 33 against a wooden block 34 fast with the fuselage. The fuselage is made of cardboard lined with a thermally protective layer of aluminium. The motor 32 is electrically ignited and as the missile moves away from the launching tube plugs are withdrawn from an electrical circuit which then ignites the motors 22.
