Abstract

1282504 Removing Fe from ilmenite BRITISH TITAN Ltd 22 July 1970 [31 July 1969] 38476/69 Headings C1A and C1N The iron in beach sand ilmenite is removed by oxidizing to Fe<SP>3+</SP> at 700-800‹ C., reducing to Fe<SP>2+</SP>, and leaching with aqueous HCl. The sand may have a particle size of 50-300 Á and may be oxidized in a fluidized bed or rotary kiln until at least 95% of the iron is Fe<SP>3+</SP>. Reduction may be effected at 650-850‹C. using H 2 Œ steam or a hydrocarbon containing 1-4 carbon atoms (as described in Specifications 1,282,503 and 1,282,324 resp.) or CO or carbon. The HCl may have a concentration of 18-22% and a temperature of from 80‹ C. to b.pt. The sand may be agitated during leaching by passage of inert gas, e.g. N 2 , and the HCl may be passed upwardly through the sand. Leaching may be effected in 2 stages as described in Specification 1,282,506. The product may be digested in H 2 SO 4 to form a cake which is dissolved to form an aqueous solution of Ti sulphate and the solution is hydrolysed to TiO 2 which is calcined. Alternatively, it may be chlorinated to give TiCl 4 which is then oxidized in vapour phase to TiO 2 . The FeCl 2 may be converted into Fe oxide or Fe, and HCl recovered.
