Abstract

1282044 Coating webs EASTMAN KODAK CO 31 July 1969 [31 July 1968] 38380/69 Heading D1L A moving web of material W supported on a backing roller 10 is continuously coated with liquid from a hopper 12, and the stream of liquid 18 bridging the gap between the hopper and the web is stabilised by reducing the air pressure on the side of the stream 18 which the web approaches by means of a suction trough 20 adjacent the hopper and open towards the web, and further by removing the boundary layer of air carried by the moving web by means of a suction knife 30 comprising a slot 31 connected to a suction source separate from that of the trough 20, which slot 31 is located within, or at the entrance 24 of, the suction trough and is closely spaced from the web and extends across the full width of the hopper 12. Pressure reduction in the suction trough may be 0.1-5.0 in. of water, and in the suction knife 17-22 in. of water. The slot 31 may be up to 0.05 in. wide, and spaced 0.02-0.03 in from the web. Application of the coating liquid may be by flow of the liquid down the hopper surface, as shown, or by means of an extrusion hopper (Fig. 2, not shown). The suction knife permits increased coating speeds; in Examples paper is coated with a silver halide dispersion.
