Abstract

1281932 Linear polyethylene ESSO RESEARCH & ENG CO 24 Oct 1969 [1 Nov 1968] 52216/69 Heading C3P Linear polyethylene is prepared by polymerizing ethylene in the presence of (1) a catalyst comprising (a) a preformed halide or oxyhalide salt of a transition metal of Groups IV-VI, in less than its maximum valence state, and (b) an organometallic compound of lead or of a Group I-III metal or of a hydride of a Group I-III metal; (2) a Lewis base as catalyst promoter; the catalyst having been contacted with an alpha-monoolefin having at least three carbon atoms and no chain branching on either vinylic carbon atom for a period of time sufficient to improve the catalyst's efficiency. The Lewis base may be a dialkyl ether or a tertiary amine. In examples, ethylene is polymerized in heptane, the catalyst being pretreated with propylene and comprising diethyl aluminium chloride and TiCl 3.1/3 AlCl 3 , the Lewis base being either tripropylamine or dibutyl ether.
