Abstract

1280850 Carbon fibres LE CARBONELORRAINE 31 Dec 1969 [31 Dec 1968] 63592/69 Heading C1A High modulus carbon fibres are prepared by treating fibres of polyacrylonitrile or of an acrylonitrile copolymer containing at least 85% by weight of acrylonitrile with one or more halogen-free ethylenically unsaturated monomers copolymerizable therewith in an aqueous bath containing (a) ions of Cu, Zn, Mn, Cr, V, Fe, Co or Ni and (b) hydroxylamine, at between 60‹ and 130‹ C., oxidizing the treated fibres in an oxygen-containing atmosphere and thereafter heating the oxidized fibres in an inert or reducing atmosphere until they are carbonized. The process may be conducted continuously by passing the fibre through the bath and then effecting multiple passages of the fibres through a heating chamber, portions of the fibre outside the heating chamber being maintained under tension by a freely suspended loaded pulley.
