Abstract

1280602 Travelling-band filters FMC CORP 27 Jan 1970 [28 Jan 1969] 4006/70 Heading B1D Solid particles are removed from a liquid, e.g. sewage effluent, by nitration through an endless screen 13 of filter material wrapped around rotatable perforated drum 22, the screen being moved (by a motor, not shown) through the liquid to be filtered in compartment 11 of tank 14; on leaving compartment 11 the solid deposit on the screen is pressed by roller 17 and the excess liquid on the other side of the screen is removed by jets of air from orifices in header 18. The screen next moves through compartment 12 where the solids are removed from it by ultrasonic transducer 45; residual solids are removed from the screen by air jets 29 impinging on both sides of the screen, and the cleaned screen then re-enters compartment 11. Filtered liquid is removed from the interior of drum 22; and the separated solids are withdrawn from compartment 12 through outlet 46. Instead of using air-jets, excess liquid may be removed from the screen by means of a squeegee, wick or sponge, a roller having a soft surface (e.g. of sponge), or a vacuum head. Alternative means for removing residual solids from the screen comprise a pair of rubber wipers, water-sprays, or two soft counter-rotating cylindrical brushes. The filter screen may be made of polyester cloth having 260 x 400 meshes/inch, the hole size being 20 microns, and the open area being 6% of the cloth surface.
