Abstract

1279443 Making bags FMC CORP 11 Sept 1969 [16 Sept 1968] 17763/71 Divided out of 1279441 Heading B5D In a machine for making bags from thermoplastic sheet material a vertically reciprocated heated cutting and sealing bar is raised by cam and push rod mechanism, the sealing bar being engaged by the upper ends of the push rods and there being means holding the sealing bar in engagement with the push rods. The sealing bar 340 co-operates with a sealing roll 106, and is secured to mechanism 104 mounted by trunnions 350 to blocks 352 attached by caps 402 to the push rods 382. Cams 108 on a shaft 110 reciprocate the push rods, and each cam has an adjustable ring 440 thereon by means of which the dwell can be altered. The sealing bar can be turned through 90‹ to an inoperative position and locked there by a spring loaded pin (Fig. 3). A bolt 400 provided with a lock nut engages a nylon disc 396 on the tops of each push rod and can be turned to provide adjustment of the penetration force of the sealing bar and moves against a graduated scale. A pneumatically operated cylinder 416 raises and lowers the sealing bar as indicated by a control circuit. The bar is lifted when the machine is being set-up; whenever the machine stops the bar lifts automatically; on starting the bar drops automatically; the bar also lifts after a predetermined number of bags have been produced to engage the bags to be removed, whereupon the machine restarts and the bar drops automatically.
