Abstract
1279125 Flavouring tobacco HAARMANN & REIMER GmbH 25 Sept 1969 [30 Sept 1968] 47165/69 Heading A2C The smoke flavour and aroma of a tobacco material or a tobacco substitute, are improved by the addition of aromatic substances obtained by fermentation and extraction of a vegetable chlorophyll-containing non-tobacco leaf material. The non-tobacco material may be fermented before extraction, or the extract may be obtained first and subsequently fermented. Leaves of various plants are mentioned as being suitable, including chestnut, horse chestnut and stinging nettle. When leaves of more than one kind of plant are used they may be processed together to obtain the extract or individually to produce extracts which are subsequently mixed in desired proportions. The smoking material may be treated with the extract by immersion or spray. Various processes for fermenting the leaves and obtaining the extracts are described, and according to one example chestnut leaves are stored for 2 weeks at 50C and 80% relative humidity and then subjected to an extraction process using steam distillation and ether. The extract, after removal of the ether, is dissolved in ethanol and sprayed on to tobacco in an amount such that after evaporation of the solvent the proportion of extract to dry weight of tobacco is 0.001%.
