Abstract

127,904. Vickers, Ltd., and Duncan, T. S. June 21, 1917. Pneumatic, hydraulic, and like springs.-Relates to shock-absorbers for use on aeroplanes when landing or moving along the ground, and consists in constructing a pumping-mechanism for maintaining the pressure of the air above a predetermined minimum, the pump being brought into action only when the air pressure falls below the predetermined minimum. T h e arrangement is particularly applicable for use with the form of shock-absorber described in Specification 568/15. Fig. 1 shows a section of such a shock-absorber fitted with the pumping-arrangements. The lower telescopic cylinder D is closed at its outer end by a sleeve G which carries the pump mechanism. A protective cap S may be used, or the sleeve may be closed at the end, except. for the valve opening. The cylinder H formed on the sleeve G has a non-return valve I at its lower end, and receives at its upper end a hollow piston K provided with non-return valves 0, M at its upper and lower ends respectively. The piston depends from a skeleton frame K<1>, and is held in its raised position by a spring R, the upward movement being limited by the engagement of the frame K<1> with the frame P carried by the sleeve G. When the air pressure above the oil &c. E falls below the upward pressure of the spring R, any motion of the shock-absorber causes the pump to come into action, and compressed air passes through the valve 0 until the pressure has been so raised that the piston is held down against the action of the spring R, when no further pumping takes place.
