Abstract
1278785 Packaging and unpackaging articles NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORP 31 Oct 1969 [1 Nov 1968] 51851/68 Heading B8C An apparatus for packaging or unpackaging electrical components or substrates includes a flexible nylon belt 1 having shallow troughs 2 from and into which the substrates are removed and placed, respectively, by an arm 11. When the belt is wound on to a reel 3 substrates or components in the troughs 2 are securely held in position between successive layers of the belt. A strip of material may be interposed between adjacent layers of the belt. The movement of the belt is controlled by a sensing device 9 which detects holes (10, Fig. 2) positioned in the belt at predetermined positions relative to the troughs 2. The sensing device 9 may be a finger (26) or a photo-electric device, a fluid logic arrangement or an electrical contact. Movement of the belt is further controlled by a detector capable of sensing the presence or absence of substrates or components in the troughs. The arm 11 may have one or several heads for gripping one or several substrates or components by means of vacuum, magnets or mechanical grippers. The belt 1 may have more than one row of troughs 2 arranged in a staggered or an in-line formation.
