Abstract

1278764 Collapsible steering columns ARMSTRONG PATENTS CO Ltd 9 Dec 1970 [24 Jan 1970] 3541/70 Heading B7H A collapsible steering column comprises a telescopic hydraulic shock absorber which has a valved piston and means, which may be a key or a spline, for maintaining the telescoping components rotationally fixed relative to one another. In a preferred embodiment steering torque imparted to the piston rod 18 from the steering assembly 30 is transmitted to the hydraulic cylinder 10 through interengaged spline components 36, 38 and hence transmitted to the steering mechanism by the end piece 14. A free piston 34 forms a compartment 36 supplied with compressed gas or may be provided with a helical spring to maintain the shock absorber in a normally extended position. In the event of an accident the piston 20 moves relative to the cylinder 10 at a controlled rate determined by the passage of hydraulic fluid through ports 22 having a valve closure assembly 42. Alternatively a spring loaded valve may be arranged at the rear face of the piston 20.
