1278655 Carboxy-substituted gammalactones MOBIL OIL CORP 18 March 1969 [20 March 1968] 36619/70 Divided out of 1278651 Addition to 1278651 Heading C2C Novel lactones of formula where R and R<SP>1</SP> are H, halogen, organic, cyano, isocyano, thiol or nitro groups, one of R<SP>2</SP> and R<SP>3</SP> is alkyl or alkenyl and the other is carboxyalkyl, carboxyalkenyl, esterified carboxyalkyl or esterified carboxyalkenyl, the sum of the number of carbon atoms in R<SP>2</SP> and R<SP>3</SP> being at least 14, are prepared by reacting a mono- or poly-unsaturated monocarboxylic acid of at least 16 C or an ester thereof, with a source of RR<SP>1</SP>CCOOH free radicals in the presence of a reducible metal ion of Mn, Ce, Fe, Ni, Co, Hg, Pd, Ag, Cu, Ti, Tl, Th, V or Sn. The free radical may be produced by the action of a salt of one of the above metals or a peroxy compound on the acid RR<SP>1</SP>CHCOOH. Polylactonea are referred to.
