Abstract

1277674 Coated polyolefine substrates FORD MOTOR CO Ltd 2 June 1970 [4 Aug 1969] 26500/70 Heading B2E [Also in Division C3] A polyolefin (i.e. polyethylene, polypropylene or an ethylene-propylene copolymer) substrate is coated by applying to the substrate a film of a paint, the paint binder of which comprises (A) from 10 to 45% by weight, based on the weight of paint binder, of an acrylate component which is a diacrylate and/or dimethacrylate of an alkane diol containing from 2 to 12 carbon atoms, a diacrylate and/or dimethacrylate of a polyether diol containing from 4 to 12 carbon atoms or a triacrylate and/or trimethacrylate of a triol containing from 6 to 12 carbon atoms and (B) from 55 to 90% by weight, based on the weight of paint binder, of a polyester resin containing component comprising from 0 to 85% by weight of one or more monovinyl monomers and from 15 to 100% by weight of an alpha-beta olefinically unsaturated polyester containing from 0.5 to 5 alpha-beta olefinic unsaturation units per 1,000 of molecular weight; and crosslinking the polyester resin with the acrylate and monovinyl monomer(s) in the paint binder by irradiation of the film with a beam of electrons having an average energy of from 100,000 to 500,000 electron volts.
