Abstract

1277556 Expanding pulling gear REIMERS GETRIEBE AG 19 April 1971 [4 April 1970] 26222/71 Heading F2D An expanding pulley comprises an axially fixed flange 2 and an axially movable flange 3 which are both mounted on a shaft 1 so as to be rotatable relative thereto, the axially movable flange 3 being connected to the shaft 1 by a pressure-applying cam and roller device 7 which is responsive to the shaft torque or to both torque and speed ratio, whilst the axially fixed flange 2 is supported on the shaft by a thrust bearing comprising a number of rolling elements 14 formed as oblate spheroids journalled at equi-angular spacings in a circumscribing support ring 18 by means of trunnions 17 projecting radially outwardly from one side of the rolling elements 14, the rolling elements 14 additionally having studs 19 projecting radially inwardly from their opposite side which centre the rollers 14 and ring 18 on an extended hub 20 of the axially fixed flange 2. As shown, three rollers 14 are equispaced in the support ring 18, whilst in Fig. 3 (not shown) only two diametrically opposed rollers 14 are located in the support ring 18 which is additionally provided with integral studs (21) for centring the thrust race unit (as before) on the flange hub 20. Additionally, the support ring 18 may be formed with a convex profile cross-section on its inner surface (Fig. 5, not shown) whereby the rolling members 14 may tilt into oblique positions (as indicated by the dotted lines) under certain conditions. The bearing races 16, 15 formed on the pulley flange 2 and shaft shoulder 13 may be flat as shown or formed convex or concave. Movement of the flange 3 for ratio change is effected by hydraulic pressure supplied to a cylinder 25. In an alternative arrangement (not shown) the oblate spheroid rolling members 14 may be replaced by cylindrical rolling members engaging thrust bearing race surfaces of convex cross-sectional profile.
