Abstract

1277276 Automatic control of speed ROLLS ROYCE Ltd 13 Oct 1969 50124/69 Heading G3R The road speed of a vehicle is controlled in response to the difference between desired and actual speed signals, the difference signal being subjected to both real time and delayed feedback from a speed control actuator to prevent overreaction to the difference signal. The speed signal comprises pulses produced in a coil 11 by a toothed disc on the propellor shaft, the frequency of which is converted to a smooth D. C. voltage in a diode pump circuit 13 for comparison with a speed reference voltage from a potentiometer 15 in a transistor amplifier unit 14. This produces a constant voltage when there is no speed error, which is balanced in a differential switching unit 16 by an equal voltage from a potentiometer 22 coupled to an engine throttle servomotor 17. The potentiometer 22 is also connected via an RC delay circuit 23 to the error input of the switching unit 16. A speed error changes this input voltage and the resulting unbalance drives the throttle servomotor in the appropriate direction. This would proceed until the voltage from 22 balanced the new input to 16 but would cause overshoot; the addition of the delayed signal through 23 prevents this. All the circuits comprise transistors and are fully described Fig. 2 (not shown) and component values are given. The linkage between the servomotor 17 and the throttle 20 includes an electromagnet which is de-energized by brake or accelerator to disable the automatic system.
