1277111 Polymerisation apparatus; roller mixing GLOLOK CO Ltd 14 May 1969 24589/69 Headings B1C and B1X [Also in Division B5] Apparatus for the production of polyurethanes for the manufacture of cellular products comprises receptacles 37; 38 for the separate reactants, rolls 29, 30 rotatable to move their upper surfaces outwardly from one another, as indicated, and in constant longitudinal intimate contact with one another to prevent liquid entering between them, means for transferring the reactants from the receptacles on to the rolls as films, and comprising, for example, discharge openings from the receptacles shaped to follow the curvature of the rolls and terminating in doctor blade edges 43, means for rotating the rolls and a casting surface to receive, the reaction mixture formed at the line of contact of the rolls, the reaction mixture falling downwardly from the line of contact of the rolls on to the casting surface. Receptacles 37, 38 can be moved into contact with the rolls to stop the flow of reactant, and the rolls can then be cleaned with a spray of solvent from tubes 65. The discharge openings of the receptacles may be divided by series of transverse partitions 46 when the films of reactants form on the rolls as ribbons kept separate by air jets from nozzles 49. Means may be provided for separating the rolls from one another. In alternative embodiments, the films may form on the rolls as they dip into shallow pans of the reactants (Fig. 8 not shown); in apparatus similar to that shown two different reactants may be transferred to each roll and travel together to the line of contact of the rolls (Fig. 9 not shown).
