Receptacles 37, 38 can be moved into contact with the rolls to stop the flow of reactant, and the rolls can then be cleaned with a spray of solvent from tubes 65. The discharge openings of the receptacles may be divided by series of transverse partitions 46 when the films of reactants form on the rolls as ribbons kept separate by air jets from nozzles 49. Means may be provided for separating the rolls from one another. In alternative embodiments, the films may form on the rolls as they dip into shallow pans of the reactants (Fig. 8 not shown); in apparatus similar to that shown two different reactants may be transferred to each roll and travel together to the line of contact of the rolls (Fig. 9 not shown).
