Abstract

1277071 Welding by pressure TINNERMAN PRODUCTS Inc 30 May 1969 [31 May 1968 3 Jan 1969] 27592/69 Heading B3R [Also in Division E2] A fastening device 2, Fig. 1, to be welded to a support and shown inverted in Fig. 1 comprises a cup-shaped body with an endless side wall and a base 8, the base having a slender tip like projection 4 extending therefrom. The metal body has flat side walls and curved end walls and an upper flange 6, the walls being inclined outwardly from the base and the base being inclined downwardly towards the projection which preferably has a sharp point. The projection may be welded to the support by capacitor welding. In one application the device 2, Fig. 12, is welded to a panel P and a clip 80 having a U-shaped body with resilient legs and a key hole slot 90, 92 in the lower leg is assembled with the device 2 by pushing the keyhole slot over the device 2 until the flange 6 holds the clip, the upper leg 86 of the clip then being engaged with the end of the slot in the lower leg. In another application Fig. 16 (not shown) a resilient U-shaped clip has an elongated opening in its lower leg which is engaged over the device and a keyhole slot in its upper leg which is engaged over the device and shifted relatively to the device to trap the upper leg beneath the flange of the device. In another application, Fig. 21 (not shown), a resilient metal clip has a curved base with a key hole slot therein and upturned end flanges, the narrow part of the slot having upstanding edges and a resilient finger lying between the edges. This clip is slid over the device which is received between the edges and engaged by the finger. In a modification, Fig. 22 (not shown), the edges and finger are omitted and the flanges are of L-shape to hold a block of wood. In another modification, Fig. 24 (not shown), the flange at one end has an outwardly directed portion and the flange at the other end is inclined and the slot in the base has a widened part on each side of the narrow part. In yet another modification, Fig. 31 (not shown), the flange at one end is bent to form an outwardly directed hook like portion. In another application a clip of U-shape, Fig. 10 (not shown), has a cruciform shaped slot in its lower leg which is located over the device and then turned through 90 degrees to lock the clip beneath the flange of the device. In another application the device 2b, Fig. 15, having a rectangular flange is welded to a panel and the clip having a flat base 108, a hook shaped flange end 112 and a rectangular opening 113 having spaced bridging fingers 119, 120 is applied to the device canting the base to position the flange in the opening and then turning the clip through 90 degrees. In another application the device 2a, Fig. 6, has projecting lugs 36 on its inner wall and is inserted through an opening 37<SP>1</SP> in the lower leg of a U-shaped clip 38 prior to welding, and after welding a plug like projection 52 having projecting lugs 54 is pressed down into the device so that lugs 54 snap beneath lugs 36. A box like construction formed by side and end walls on the clip partly encloses the device. In a modification a clip, Fig. 28 (not shown), having a flat metallic base two upstanding hook like end flanges and a plug like member of plastics projecting from beneath the base is assembled with the device by pressing the plug into the device. In another application a metal clip 292, Fig. 26, having a base 294 with inverted U-shaped portions 296, 298 at its ends and an aperture 308 surrounded by resilient fingers 304 is assembled with a device as in Fig. 1 by pressing the clip over the device until the fingers engage beneath the flange. In a final application a metal clip 230, Fig. 19, in the general form of an open loop with elongated apertures 236, 240 in its ends, larger than the device but narrower than the flange 6, is assembled with a device 2 by inserting the apertures, in a counted position of the clip, over the flange 6 and into engagement with the panel. Pressure is then applied to the clip causing the ends of the loop to move apart and the openings to engage beneath the flange. It is stated that mouldings, trim strips and electrical components may be secured to panels by means of the assemblies.
