Abstract

1276856 Silica articles manufacture TEXAS INSTRUMENTS Inc 12 June 1969 [11 July 1968] 29852/69 Heading C1M In the manufacture of open-mouthed articles of silica or like sinterable materials, a mandrel 16 or 20 is inserted into a similar, but larger, article 10 or 22, the mandrel having a top abutment and a base portion 24 which forms an annular shoulder 17 or 26 substantially normal to the outer surface of the mandrel and which lies inside the mouth 12 or 28 of the article, the article then being heated to shrink the article on to the mandrel, the initial shrinkage of the mouth 12 or 28 round the annular shoulder 17 or 26 together with the top abutment acting to resist subsequent shrinkage along the mandrel, the cooled article then being removed from the mandrel by removal of the portion abutting the shoulder. Preferably the mandrel is of material, such as graphite, with a temperature coefficient of expansion substantially higher than that of the article. Crucibles so made are suitable for use in pulling monocrystalline silicon from a melt of pure silicon.
