Abstract

1276648 Selective printer INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORP 8 June 1970 [25 June 1969] 27554/70 Heading B6F In a selective printer, character bearing type elements (11, Figs. 1 and 4) moving along a print line selectively impact a ribbon (14) against a web (13) backed by a platen 23. The platen is automatically retracted at the end of each line of print to provide adequate clearance for line feeding. The platen is similar to that described in Specification 1,168,417 and comprises a bar having a smooth edge 23a and diagonal slots 27 for receiving guide blocks 29. The guide blocks 29 are secured to an adjustable support 31 which is used to set the initial clearance of the platen, and springs 33 bias the platen to the retracted position. An electromagnet 34, when energized, moves the platen to the forward or printing position, where it is latched by an electromagnetically releasable pawl 36a.
