Abstract

1276524 Filtering apparatus and filter cleaning ion-exchange apparatus ECODYNE CORP 18 Aug 1969 [30 Aug 1968] 41143/69 Heading BID A plurality of upright, inward-flow cylindrical filter cartridges in a common housing (Fig. 1, not shown) operate with a coating of diatomaceous earth or ion exchange resin, which is removed when contaminated by draining the filtering chamber, then delivering a mixture of wash liquid and gas to the interiors of the cartridges to fill the chamber progressively while backwashing the cartridges. The chamber may then be drained of liquid while containing the supply of gas, and the cleaning process repeated several times. The cartridges may be wire mesh or the helically wound nylon or natural fibre type and screw on to filtrate outlet pipes 30 which extend into lower filtrate compartment (24) where they carry respective distributors 32, whose lower ends all open on the same horizontal plane. During cleaning air is delivered to the top of compartment (24) and wash water, detergent solution or solvent to the bottom via filtrate outlet (16). The liquid level in compartment (24) is held as shown and proper proportions of air and liquid enter apertures 34 and the open ends of distributors 32. Optimum rates of rise and fall of liquid level in the filtering chamber are given. Fig. I illustrates an elaborate circuit whereby the resin or filter aid is applied to the cartridges, the housing being filled with demineralised water into which filter aid slurry is pumped from vessel (72) and circulated through and across the cartridges. A particular application is purifying the steam condensate in a nuclear power station to remove solids and dissolved radioactive matter. In this case the initial draining will be to a storage tank, and may be preceded by a cooling stage wherein cold water is circulated through the housing. Anion exchange resins of the phenolformaldehyde, divinylbenzene-styrene copolymer, acrylic or epoxy types may be used in the chloride or hydroxide form. Cation resins of the divinylbenzene-styrene copolymer, acrylic, phenolic or sulphonated coal type may be used in the sodium, hydrogen, ammonium or hydrazine form. Or mixtures of such anion and cation resins may be used.
